At Switch, we want to take action to contribute towards a greener future and are proud to be a leading force for responsible and sustainable hospitality.
In January 2024, we opened the new aparthotel Birmingham Snowhill with an industry-leading, eco-conscious design.
With a commitment to consider, collaborate and care, we have created a space that builds positive environmental impact and enhances the local community - delivering real benefits for guests, residents, businesses and the city.
Sustainability is embedded within the very foundations of aparthotel’s low carbon design - the first of its kind in the region.
Formerly the Royal Angus Hotel, we oversaw the sensitive remodelling of the site into aparthotel, which is now one of the city’s most sustainable developments. From the earliest design stages, we invested in upgrades to the site’s infrastructure to ensure its operations would have minimal environmental impact throughout the build process and beyond.
As a completely gasless site, aparthotel now runs off 100% renewable energy, generated entirely from solar and wind power, whilst heat pumps and heat recovery systems eliminate the use of fossil fuels.
And to keep energy consumption down, our building management system gives us 24/7 control over aparthotel’s usage, so we can effectively manage our heating output and electricity use to keep any waste to an absolute minimum.
We also encourage our guests to limit their use of single-use products, with refillable Rituals toiletries, bamboo stationary, refillable glass water bottles, and bins for plastic, glass, paper and food waste provided in every room.
We’re proud that this considered and eco-conscious approach has resulted in an Energy Performance Certificate rating of “10A”, where “0A” indicates net-zero carbon emissions. This rating has positioned aparthotel as a leading sustainable development, with significantly lower emissions than the industry average of “17A” for new builds and “68C” for existing buildings.
We believe that collaboration can help foster positive community impact, and we’re working closely with local charities and businesses in the city to build new networks and partnerships.
To support local sectors, we provide discounted room rates and meeting room hire for law courts, theatres, and charities such as Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We’re also working closely with a not-for-profit organisation to offer accommodation for vulnerable people in need, and our team continues to fundraise and volunteer for a variety of local causes.
As a prime business hub, a host of major names in the tech, finance and creative sectors now call Birmingham their home. We host regular open evenings and pop up events with local companies to discuss new collaboration opportunities that could help their business thrive.
To ensure that everyone feels right at home at aparthotel, we hold a weekly drinks event for long-stay guests in ‘The Hub’ on our ground floor. Health and well-being is key for all our visitors, so we also provide an on-site bike rack and in-room branded yoga mats on request.
With our prime city-centre location, we want to shout about the best of Birmingham and through our weekly social media series, ‘Local Spotlight’, we showcase great independents and areas of interest that will help make a stay in the city one to remember.
And, as a people-driven business, we want to make aparthotel a positive environment for our staff as well as our guests. We’re proud of our diverse team and as part of our commitment to staff development and inclusivity, we provide access to a wide range of workshops and training courses to give every individual the tools they need to succeed.
